Starship Troopers Soundtrack : This is simply a great soundtrack for any science fiction war adventure. Basil Poledouris gets two thumbs up as always! Saving Private Ryan-Soundtrack: This somber music from John Williams can be just the thing to add a dark atmosphere to your writing or gaming. Band of Brothers Soundtrack: Surprisingly good, this collection of music is both powerful and evocative. Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts : Not only are they a lot of fun to listen too, their big-band sound is a throwback to the swinging grooves of the 1940s. Glenn Miller - Greatest Hits: This is some of the most popular music of the era. Want to know what's on the radio in the background while your characters fight to save the world? The Essential Glenn Miller: More the great work of Glen Miller. Very Best of Benny Goodman: Another great composer on the 1940s, Benny Goodman recorded dozens of popular songs. Very Best of Duke Ellington: Duke Ellington is among the best composers of the era, his music might be found on vinyl recordings throughout Europe and America. Strangitude Perhaps the best Ozric Tentacles album, recorded back in 1991, this collection of songs is an undulating sound-scape of spacey effects and funky grooves. Jurassic Shift: Another great album from Ozric Tentacles Perfect for those adventures into the deepest parts of Africa or even back in time. Erpland: Another truly great soundtrack for escaping into the realms of science fiction. Tantric Obstacles / Erpsongs: More great psychedelic space music from the Tentacles. Some people say this is their best collection of music ever published. Waterfall Cities : Perhaps the most psychedelic of the Tentacles' albums, this composition will sweep you away to surreal places of mystery and adventure. Ummagumma-Live Although the first disc is good, it is the second disc that features Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, Astronomy Domine, and Careful With That Axe, Eugene, all of which are great soundtracks for sci-fi adventure. Echoes - The second disc in this two disc collection features a complete, uninterrupted, version of Shine on You Crazy Diamond, followed by several other good tunes including When the Tigers Broke Free, which is a great song about WWII. Science Fiction MoviesThe Mask of Fu Manchu: Boris Karloff, as the evil mastermind Dr. Fu Manchu, races against a team of British archeologists and adventurers in a quest to find Ghengis Khan's treasure. Death rays, lost artifacts, and evil scientists make this a classic film of the era. Buck Rogers, (1939 Serial) This is where much of the genre began. Check out the roots of serial sci-fi of the 40s. Flash Gordon, Complete Original Series: This collection features the complete series of the original Flash Gordon that first aired on TV in the 1930s. Flash Gordon, Space Soldiers: More great cliff-hanger adventure with Flash Gordon's original series. Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe This classic of pulp sci-fi takes Flash, Dr.. Zarkov, and Dale go back to planet Mongo to stop Ming the Merciless before he kills everyone on earth with a dread new disease, the Purple Death! Flash Gordon (1980) Campy but authentic, this early 80s revival of the story of Flash Gordon is etched into the memory of generation X. The War of the Worlds: This 1953 version of H.G. Wells' classic story is pure science fiction at its best. It Came From Outer Space: Great sci-fi based of the writings of Ray Bradbury, this movie is a classic of the genre. The Purple Monster Strikes: A crashed alien ship, an ex-Federal agent, rocket scientists, and serial killings make this a classic Sci-fi adventure from the 1940s. Black Dragons : Not a great movie, but it does feature Bela Logosi and it deals with the secret Japanese society, the Black Dragons, which also appear in 1948.. Destination Moon Based on the novel by Robert Heinlin, this movie tells the speculative story of man's first efforts to establish a base on the moon. Man Made Monster : The most amazing monster the world has ever known! Well, maybe anyway... this is a good movie starring Lon Chaney jr. as an electrically controlled zombie, created by a mad scientist bent on world domination. Forbidden Planet One of the best sci-fi movies of all time, Forbidden Planet features impressive special effects, good acting, and a well designed script. Jungle Girl: This is a surprisingly good series about heroine in the deepest Jungles of Africa. Radar Men From the Moon (1952): Among the last of the great serials of the era, this collection features some of the best story-telling of all the 1940s cliffhangers. War of the Worlds (1953): This is probably the most well known version of the classic science fiction tale from H.G. Wells, featuring some great sets and spaceship designs. Undersea Kingdom : Robots, ray guns, and undersea adventure at its best! The Adventures of Indiana Jones: This DVD collection includes the complete set of the Indiana Jones movies, which feature many of the same elements that can be found in a good 1948 adventure: Nazis, remote locales, underground cults, Templar knights, holy artifacts-- and its all set in the 1930s-1940s time period.
War MoviesThe Story of G.I. Joe: A movie about the war, made during the war, based on actual events of the war, staring Robert Mitchum and Burgess Meredith. Saving Private Ryan: The new standard in WWII movies, this film depicts the harsh realites of war in a way that surpasses all others. Band of Brothers: HBO's miniseries examines the adventures of the 101st Airborne division, as they fight their way across Europe in the last year of the war. The Thin Red Line: A fairly good movie with Sean Penn, deals with the difficulties that arose in the Pacific theater. The Longest Day: This is a fair WWII movie featuring John Wayne Patton: The classic 1970 film featuring George C. Scott as Old Blood and Guts. This film won 7 Academy Awards back in 1970 and can still stand up to the best war movies of today. Enemy at the Gates A good movie about the Soviet hero/sniper Vassili Zaitsev. When Trumpets Fade: First aired on HBO before Saving Privite Ryan hit the theaters, this movies is a look at the harsh battle of Hurtigen Forest, fought between American and German forces. The Lost Battalion Although this is actually a movie about WWI, it is still a great depiction of early 20th century warfare. It is one hell of a heroic story too! Hart's War Some people liked it, some people hated it, check it out today and be your own judge. CartoonsG.I. Joe - Valor Vs. Venom: This is a fairly new release that uses top notch CGI technology to tell a heroic story featuring Snake Eyes, Scarlet and a a few other Joes. G.I. Joe-The Original Mini-Series: This is where it all started, check out the original G.I. Joe mini-series right here. Revenge of the Cobra: The second full length Joe movie introduces new characters (Zartan) and tells the story of the Weather Dominator. G.I. Joe Season 1, Part 1: The first half of the first regular season of G.I. Joe. G.I. Joe - Season 1, Part 2 : The second half of the first regular season. G.I. Joe - Season 2, Part 1 : The first half of the second season, introducing a few new characters and sub-plots. G.I. Joe: The Movie : Remember Cobra-la? remember the race of snake people under the Himalayan mountains? although it was never shown in theaters, this movie ran as a miniseries on TV back in the 80s. FictionThe Man in the High Castle : A good book by a great author about an alternate outcome of WWII. The Allies have lost the war and America is occupied by the Axis countries! Foucault's Pendulum: A deep and complex read by Uberto Eco. If you can swallow it, its a pretty good story about conspiracy and Templar knights. Holy Blood, Holy Grail: This is the book that started much of the current speculative fiction about the the Priori of Sion and the mysteries of the Grail. The Da Vinci Code : Dan Brown's ubiquitous top seller is responsible for much of the current interest in history of the Priori of Sion. 1984 : This list wouldn't be complete without a reference to Orwell's masterful science fiction adventure about Thought Police, tele-screens, politics, and war.
NonfictionGerman Secret Weapons of the Second World War: This is a pretty good book with a lot of technical data on various Nazi wonder weapons, most of which appear in the 1948 rules. The Story of World War II This is a superb look at the complex events of WWII, originally written in 1945, when the ashes of the war were still smoldering.
