Book of Broken Dreams

The Book of Broken Dreams  features 90+ pages of optional rules for adding realistic effects of  trauma, psychosis, group dynamics, and personality disorders to your d20 game.

Chapter One outlines the crippling psychological effects of traumatic stress and details the most common disorders that afflict trauma survivors: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and dissociation.

Chapter Two introduces a system of personality development that produces thousands of realistic, believable and diverse personalities which span the spectrum of sanity. From the mildly avoidant to the severely anti-social, these personalities will bring a vivid new dimension to your role-playing games.

Chapter Three discusses what really happens when characters become insane. Schizophrenia, dementia, manic-depression and more are all discussed in clear, game-mechanic terms. Add these options to your game for a dose of harsh reality and an accurate depiction of madness.

Chapter Four contains an extensive look at group dynamics and conflict, offering details on the inner workings of mobs, riots, juries and other dangerous groups. Bad decisions, power, factions, and physical violence are all discussed in an objective manner with plenty of examples of how to use them to create dramatic, character-driven plot lines.

Chapter Five  includes dozens of new spells  inspired by psychology. Mind bending magic like  burden of proof, elude, labyrinthine conundrum, normalcy, and many, many more can be used to bring a nightmarish new dimension to your d20 games.

Chapter Six of of the Book of Broken Dreams covers three new prestige classes, the mentalist, the lunatic, and the dream weaver. It also presents a new template for nightmare creatures and a new feat called  Lucid Dreaming.

Add these options to your game today and watch your characters writhe in the grip of disorder, trauma, dysfunction, and madness!

reviews

Customers who purchased the original version of the Book of Broken Dreams (released in 2002) gave it an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 and said:

  • "... I really liked this book, and hope to use a lot of chapter 2 and 3, as well as some of the spells...  This is really good value, considering the good quality of the non-mechanic aspects of the rules."

  • "This d20 supplement provides not only a real-world explanation of and usable game mechanisms for topics like personality types, stress, and insanity, but also includes a number of psychologically inspired spells, three similarly inspired prestige classes (the Dream Weaver, the Lunatic, and the Mentalist), as well as a template for Nightmare Creatures....it will also add a darker and more realistic turn to a fantasy setting..."
